PYRENOID - in foraminiferal symbionts a dense body rich in proteins in the chloroplast, often surrounded by storage carbohydrates (starch). Seen in the transmission electron microscope the shape of pyrenoids may be diagnostic for the differentiation of groups of algal endosymbiont.
